This Chiffonier; not a true antique but an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture with leather inlays, gold gilding and the top drawer is lined in black velvet. The drawers slide in and out out easily and the storage in each one is significant.

Understanding the Chiffonier: During England’s Empire period, the chiffonier was a popular piece of furniture that demonstrated a mixed sense of style. As a smaller version of a sideboard, it can also be a low bookcase of the English Regency, with grille doors or no doors at all.

Chiffonier vs. Sideboard

The terms sideboard and chiffonier can describe the same piece of furniture. In French, chiffonier means rag-picker, which this furniture piece was meant to hold various odds and ends.

The Evolution of the Chiffonier:

Over time, the chiffonier’s size was reduced significantly. Rather than a taller chest of drawers, the chiffonier became a smaller cupboard. Instead of multiple drawers, it only had one upper drawer, similar to the sideboard.
